Kate Countryman is a seasoned professional in strategic communications and media relations with over 15 years of experience in political campaigns, public affairs, and legislative communications. In March 2023, she launched her own firm, Summit Edge Strategies Group, where she now works full-time helping organizations navigate complex messaging challenges, media engagement, and public positioning. Her firm reflects years of frontline experience and a deep understanding of how to shape narratives that drive impact. Kate began her career after earning a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Scranton. She entered the political field as a field organizer on a Congressional campaign and went on to serve in roles spanning campaign consulting, lobbying, and public affairs. Her expertise led her to positions such as press secretary for former U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly’s 2018 campaign, communications director for the Indiana House Democratic Caucus, and State Communications Director for U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in Colorado. One of her proudest professional accomplishments includes contributing to the expansion of the Child Tax Credit under the American Rescue Plan Act, which provided vital support to families nationwide. In addition to her professional achievements, Kate is an active advocate for mental health awareness and community engagement. She is involved with organizations such as Hoosier Women Forward and has expressed interest in board service. Personally, she launched “Run for Ryan,” a fundraising initiative in honor of her brother, who died by suicide, which supports scholarships and raises awareness for suicide prevention. Kate continues to support mental health causes through her involvement with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), using her voice to bring attention to causes close to her heart.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, purpose, and a deep belief in using communications to create real change. One of my proudest accomplishments has been building my own business, Summit Edge Strategies Group. Launching it after an unexpected layoff was both a personal and professional turning point—proof that resilience can lead to something even greater. I’m also incredibly proud of the work I did on the expansion of the Child Tax Credit while working for Senator Michael Bennet. Being part of the team that helped shape a policy included in the American Rescue Plan Act, which brought meaningful financial relief to families across the country, was deeply fulfilling—even though it lasted just one year. Both experiences reflect what matters most to me: doing work that helps others and leaves a lasting impact.
